IUSY urges international community to take decisive action and end the bloodshed in Sudan

Sudan is being torn apart before our eyes. Since April 2023, a brutal conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has thrown the country into chaos. What began as a power struggle between military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) has spiraled into a devastating civil war. The roots of this crisis lie in Sudan’s long-standing political instability following the 2019 overthrow of Omar al-Bashir, with tensions escalating over plans to integrate the RSF into the national army.

The humanitarian situation is catastrophic. Over 150,000 people have been killed, 11 million displaced, and famine is spreading as both sides target civilians. Ethnic violence in Darfur, mass sexual violence, and the obstruction of humanitarian aid are deepening the suffering.

The international community's response has been insufficient. Despite the escalating crisis, only half of the requested humanitarian aid has been raised, leaving millions without essential support. Meanwhile, some states and private actors continue to supply weapons and financial support to the warring factions, fueling further destruction.

IUSY calls on the international community, particularly world leaders, the UN, international organizations, and civil society organizations to break the silence and take decisive action.?We cannot allow ignorance and inaction to enable further bloodshed. Immediate steps must be taken to stop the violence, provide humanitarian aid, and pave the way for a lasting resolution.

IUSY urges all relevant stakeholders to:

1. Immediately cease hostilities. All parties must agree to an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life.

2. Increase humanitarian aid. The international community must mobilize resources to ensure food, water, and medical supplies reach the victims without obstruction or political and military interference.

3. End the flow of weapons. Governments and arms suppliers must halt the export of weapons and funding to all parties of the conflict.

4. Bring accountability for war crimes. The UN and the International Criminal Court must investigate and hold those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable.

5. Ensure safe passage for refugees and displaced people. Immediate protections must be granted by host countries and international bodies to Sudanese refugees and internally displaced persons to ensure their safety.

6. Reach a just and sustainable resolution. Diplomatic efforts must support a democratic transition that respects the rights of the Sudanese people, free from military oppression and foreign exploitation.

IUSY stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan. We call on all governments, progressive movements and the socialist family to stand against this injustice, take meaningful action, and stop the bloodshed. Together, we must break the cycle of silence and indifference!
