IUSY demands firm sanctions against the Hungarian government to repeal this law and allow the free celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride

IUSY demands firm sanctions against the Hungarian government to repeal this law and allow the free celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride.

IUSY expresses its strongest condemnation of the recent approval by the Hungarian government of a law banning the celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride. This measure constitutes a direct attack on the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals, as well as a serious violation of democratic principles and the values upheld by the European Union.

This law not only seeks to erase the visibility of sexual and gender diversity but also represents a frontal assault on fundamental Human Rights, including freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and the right to peaceful protest. LGBTQIA+ Pride, as an act of visibility and advocacy, is a crucial celebration of dignity, equality, and diversity—principles that must be defended in all democratic societies.

Hungary was once a pioneer in Europe. In 2003, it enacted a decree on equal treatment and promotion of equal opportunities, prohibiting discrimination based on factors such as sexual orientation and gender identity.

However, the current ultra-right-wing international movement is succeeding in rolling back legislative progress on freedoms like the right to peaceful assembly. This global coalition is overexposing LGBTQIA+ individuals to violence with not only legal consequences but also physical and psychological repercussions.

Therefore, we urge the European Union to take immediate action to ensure the defense of Human Rights principles, as established in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union. We demand firm sanctions against the Hungarian government to repeal this law and allow the free celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride. Should the violation of these rights persist, we call on the EU to consider expelling Hungary from the Union as a last resort.

As IUSY, we unite in this appeal, convinced that the fight for equality and freedom knows no borders. We will not allow the regression of LGBTQIA+ rights to become the norm in any country. It is time to act with determination, solidarity, and responsibility to ensure the dignity of all people is respected. Human Rights are non-negotiable
