European Committee 2024 Report

The 2024 edition of the European Committee (EC) of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) took place from May 9th to 12th in Madrid, Spain. This event was organized in cooperation with JSE Spain, a member organization of IUSY. The central theme of the meeting was "Fighting extremism ahead of the European elections".

The event hosted approximately 25 delegates, including the Secretariat. There was a high representation of countries from the European region, with delegates from over 14 different countries.

Daily Activities:

May 9th: In collaboration with JSE, we had a comprehensive discussion on the dangers of extremism at a global level. This session set the tone for the event, highlighting the urgency and importance of combating extremism.

May 10th: The day featured multiple key activities:

Panel on Extremism and the 2024 European Elections: presented by Victor Carmino, Miguel Costa Matos, and Philipp Türmer;

Session on Disinformation and Democratization of Digital Societies: presented by Iago Moreno;

Presentation of a commission on extremism established by Nordic parties: by Gaute Skjervø;

Visit to the Congreso de los Diputados: Participants had the unique opportunity to visit the Spanish parliament, experiencing an immersive simulation of a parliamentary session, enriching their understanding of legislative processes and fostering a deeper connection to democratic practices.

May 11th: On the last day, each participant contributed, sharing ideas and thoughts that could help improve the strategies discussed.

Significant Results:

Statement Against Extremism: The EC 2024 released a statement providing 30 actionable ideas to combat extremism at local and community levels;

Discussions on Political Extremism: There were in-depth discussions, reflections, and exchanges regarding the situation of political extremism in the countries represented;

High Participation and Representation: The event saw great participation, with over 20 participants from 14 different countries, highlighting the broad and diverse engagement within the European region.
