The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) strongly condemns the attack suffered by Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay in Bogotá.
We express our full solidarity with the National Organization of Liberal Youth of Colombia (ONJL), a member of our network, and with all democratic forces that are resisting the return of political violence in the country.
For an entire generation of young Colombians, this violence seemed to belong to a bygone era, narratives passed by parents and grandparents. Sadly, today’s reality shows that democratic engagement in Colombia remains under threat.
We are deeply alarmed by the lack of effective guarantees from the current Colombian government to protect those involved in political life, as well as by the growing climate of fear and intimidation spreading across the country.
IUSY urgently calls on the Colombian authorities to:
Fear must not silence democracy!
At IUSY, we stand in solidarity with ONJL and Colombia’s youth activists, united in the struggle to reclaim democracy and build a future where peace, justice, and freedom are not just ideals, but lived realities.
