Solidarity Statement on Serbia
IUSY stands in full solidarity with the people of Serbia and the democratic forces demanding accountability, transparency, and a sustainable democratic transition that ensures the rights of its citizens. The recent wave of protests reflects the people's deep frustration with corruption, government negligence and the decline of democratic norms. The protests, which began in November 2024, were fueled by the tragic collapse of a train station canopy, which resulted in fatalities and highlighted government incompetence. These protests reflect the growing demand for accountability and democratic change."
We condemn any attempts to suppress peaceful demonstrations and urge the Serbian authorities to respect fundamental freedoms, including the right to protest and express dissent. The presence of pro-government groups and the threat of violence against activists is deeply concerning. We call on the government to respect the fundamental rights of the Serbian people, address their concerns and demands, and guarantee democratic principles.
The struggle for democracy, accountability, and social justice is not just Serbia’s fight, it is a global one. IUSY stands with all those resisting authoritarianism and striving for a fair and just society. We will continue to support the progressive forces in Serbia, including students, workers, and activists, in their pursuit of a government that serves the people, not a corrupt elite.
