IUSY calls for an international investigation of the recent attack in Kosovo
IUSY strongly condemns the heinous attack on critical civilian infrastructure that took place on Friday, November 29th - as a large explosive device was detonated on the main canal of the Iber-Lepenc water system, causing severe damage, near the village of Vragë in Zubin Potok. The attacked water system supplies water to several cities in Kosovo, as well as to thermal power plants, generating electricity.
Several cities, including parts of Pristina, the capital, face the risk of losing access to drinking water. Actions targeting critical infrastructure, vital to Kosovo's functioning, pose a serious challenge and could disrupt essential services like electricity and water. Such actions undermine stability and should be addressed accordingly.
The attack had a sole purpose of causing destruction and disarray in Kosovo, while also harming the climate. Destroying critical water infrastructure harms the environment, disrupts local ecosystems and adds to the long-term effects of climate change in the region.
Only a year after the terrorist attack in Banjska, Kosovo, carried out by Serbian criminal groups led by Milan Radoni?, an attack that resulted in the tragic death of Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku. Now, Kosovo is once again facing severe attacks.
We urge the EU and International community to issue a thorough investigation of the attack, until those responsible are held accountable - both within legal and political framework.
We call for the full cooperation and compliance with the investigation by all.
As socialist youth from across the globe, we extend our solidarity towards Kosovo and its people. We will continue to watch this case closely!
