IUSY Condemns Trump’s Sanctions Against the ICC

IUSY strongly condemns President Trump’s decision to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). This attack on the ICC is an assault on international justice and accountability, sending a dangerous message that certain states and leaders are above the law. With this step, Trump endorses impunity for grave crimes and is willing to undermine the global legal order for political gain.

Imposing sanctions on the ICC is a deliberate attempt to weaken international law and obstruct efforts to hold perpetrators of serious crimes accountable. It is a direct attack on the global justice system that has been built over decades to protect human rights and prevent atrocities. These sanctions constitute yet another violation of our shared humanity and the fundamental principle that those responsible for the world’s worst crimes must be held accountable.

The US is punishing an institution whose mission is to ensure that individuals most responsible for atrocities cannot escape justice. No one who commits crimes under international law should be shielded from accountability, moreover with the backing of the U.S. government based on President Trump’s political gains.

At a time when we are witnessing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh and the deterioration of international law on multiple fronts, institutions like the ICC are more crucial than ever. This attack on the Court undermines its ability to pursue justice, emboldens perpetrators, and harms victims worldwide, where the ICC is conducting investigations including in Darfur, Libya, Palestine, Ukraine, the Philippines, and Venezuela.

IUSY stands firmly against the attempt to weaken international justice and calls on the global community to reject these sanctions and defend the ICC’s critical role in ensuring accountability and preventing future atrocities.
