In Focus: Africa's Economic Potential

Africa, characterized by diversity and resilience, faces economic challenges amidst promising growth projections. With abundant resources and a youthful population, strategic investments and inclusive policies are crucial for sustainable development and overcoming global uncertainties.

Global perspectives

This month, Víctor Camino, MP in Spain, IUSY’s Vice-President, and Secretary-General of JSE, sheds light on current sentiments and trends among youth regarding democracy and governance. Despite global advancements in digital transition and educational access, there's a growing pessimism about the future, fueling populist sentiments. Víctor emphasizes the urgent need for inclusive political actions to address generational frustrations and to safeguard democratic values amid digital transformations.

Guest of the month

Our amazing guest of the month is Manuel Domingos Augusto, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola, we discussed the challenges facing young people across the African continent today. Augusto emphasized the ongoing struggle against poverty, hunger, malnutrition, and vulnerabilities to diseases and epidemics. He highlighted the critical issues of unemployment and access to education, which contribute to social phenomena such as emigration. Augusto also discussed efforts in Angola and across Africa to address income inequality through improved educational opportunities for young girls and legislative measures promoting fair labor remuneration and service provision.

Iusy Activities and Highlights

This month, IUSY was involved in diverse and impactful activities. Our election observation mission diligently monitored Panama's general elections, ensuring transparency and upholding democratic values. Similarly, in the Dominican Republic, we observed elections to promote fairness and legitimacy in the electoral process.
The European Committee (EC) of IUSY convened in Madrid, Spain, focusing on "Fighting extremism ahead of the European elections." Delegates from 14 countries engaged in discussions on global extremism threats and digital disinformation, alongside visits to the Spanish parliament. The committee concluded by proposing actionable strategies to strengthen community resilience and combat extremism across Europe.
Most notably, nine IUSY members were successfully elected to the European Parliament, including our Secretary-General Bruno Goncalves. Their election underscores our commitment to advancing progressive agendas like equality and environmental sustainability within the EU.
