IUSY Monthly Newsletter: November/December Edition
As we approach the end of 2024, we take this opportunity to reflect on a year that has been both challenging and defining for our movement.
In Focus: Syrian Civil War
In 2024, the Syrian Civil War continued with Assad’s regime controlling most of the country, while opposition forces in the northwest, supported by Turkey, resisted. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) faced ongoing tensions with Turkey, and U.S. support for the SDF further strained relations with the Assad regime and Russia. Meanwhile, Israel conducted airstrikes on Iranian-backed militias in southern Syria. Despite a decrease in large-scale combat, the humanitarian crisis worsened, and in December 2024, Assad’s regime collapsed, marking a turning point in the conflict, with hopes for a more inclusive and democratic future.
Global Perspectives
In 2024, the U.S. presidential election dominated global attention, with candidates' policies on climate change, foreign relations, and economic recovery set to impact global alliances and trade. In Europe, elections in France saw a significant victory for the left-wing coalition led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, reflecting a shift toward progressive agendas on social justice and climate action. The UK’s Labour Party, under Keir Starmer, triumphed, focusing on economic rebuilding and public services. Upcoming elections in Germany, following the collapse of the government, are expected to reshape the political landscape, with the far-right AfD gaining influence. Meanwhile, Italy and Spain saw the continuation of right-wing and progressive leadership, respectively, shaping future political dynamics in Europe.
