In Focus: Women's Rights in Afghanistan and Beyond

Since the Taliban regained power in August 2021, Afghan women have faced an unrelenting crackdown on their basic rights, resulting in a humanitarian crisis. The modest advancements made in education, employment, and civil liberties over the past two decades have been reversed. Today, Afghan women are deprived of fundamental rights, including the right to speak, work, and receive an education. They are subjected to severe restrictions on their appearance and behavior, forced to wear clothing that covers them from head to toe. The situation is urgent, and IUSY has vocally condemned the gender apartheid imposed by the Taliban regime.

Global Perspectives

This month, we highlight Jessali’s perspective on the situation in Latin America, where significant inequalities between men and women persist. Despite the progress made in some areas, the ongoing struggles for gender equality reveal the need for sustained advocacy and action across the globe.

Guest of the Month

Our guest of the month is Chloé Ridel, a young MEP from PS France. In her interview with IUSY, she shares her insights on gender issues and the vital role of the EU in defending women's rights. Chloé emphasizes the importance of a united front in the fight for gender equality and the need for concrete actions to support women's empowerment in Europe and beyond.

IUSY Activities and Highlights

On September 25, Hend Mgaieth and Bruno Gonçalves represented IUSY at the International Socialist Presidium Meeting in New York during the UN General Assembly, where leaders discussed the Pact for the Future and urgent global challenges, including climate change and rising populism. From October 5-8, the IUSY presidium convened in Rabat to plan upcoming events and approve the year planning for 2025. Additionally, on October 4, Vice President María Panay met with activist Olimpia Coral Melo in Panama City to discuss the Olimpia Law, which aims to combat digital violence by criminalizing the non-consensual sharing of intimate content.
