Statement of Solidarity with the People of Greece on the second anniversary of the Tempi train disaster

IUSY stands in full solidarity with the families of the victims as they demand justice on the second anniversary of the Tempi train disaster. This tragedy, which claimed 57 innocent lives, was the result of chronic neglect, systemic failures, and the lack of political will to address safety concerns in Greece’s railway system.

The recent report by the Hellenic Air and Rail Safety Investigation Authority confirmed that the disaster was preventable. The failure to implement necessary safety measures, despite repeated warnings, is a grave injustice. The public outcry and mass demonstrations are a testament to the deep frustration and demand for real accountability by the Greek people.

We stand with the families of the victims, the citizens of Greece and our comrades in PASOK Youth and PASOK, who have been one of the leading forces calling for accountability, meaningful reforms and justice for this tragedy. IUSY fully supports their calls for those responsible, both past and present to be held accountable.

IUSY urges the Greek government to stop deflecting responsibility and take immediate, concrete action to overhaul the railway system, enforce safety regulations, and ensure that such a catastrophe never happens again. 

The people of Greece deserve transparency, justice and a government that prioritizes their safety over political expediency.

The struggle against negligence, corruption, and disregard for human life is a global one and we must all work together to demand accountability.  IUSY urges all progressive forces and governments all over the world to join the call and demand accountability and transparency from the Greek government.
