IUSY supports US student protests in their pursuit of freedom of speech

IUSY strongly stands with students across the United States who bravely raise their voices for justice in Palestine. Recent events, particularly at Columbia University, MIT, and other academic institutions, have shown students taking remarkable and historical steps toward advocating for just and transparent policies at their universities and revolting in solidarity with Palestine. These students demand an end to partnerships and investments that support Israeli military actions in Gaza, pushing for divestment policies from companies that invest in illegal Israeli settlements in Westbank, moral change of their institutions' roles in geopolitical affairs, and an end to the Israeli aggression and act of genocide in Gaza.

IUSY is shocked by the responses of some university administrations that involve police interventions against peaceful student protests. These interventions included violent action by the police and tens of arrests against students in multiple universities across the USA. The infringement on students' rights to free speech and assembly under the guise of maintaining order or preventing antisemitic sentiments is troubling. It is crucial to distinguish between legitimate criticism of government policies and discrimination or hateful rhetoric and violence against Jewish communities, which we condemn and do not accept that type of human rights violations. Mixing legitimate criticism with discrimination shuts down necessary dissent and critique, which is vital in a free and democratic society.

We strongly condemn and suppression of student voices, academic staff and the punitive measures taken against them, which include arrests, suspension orders, disciplinary actions, and expelling. Such measures contradict the principles of academic freedom and the educational mission to promote justice, critical thinking, and positive engagement in society and global affairs, which are essential in a democratic and egalitarian society.

IUSY reaffirms its stand in solidarity with these courageous students and supports all students in pursuing freedom of speech and transparency from their educational institutions, which some remain besieged as students continue their protests in tents within their campuses. We commend their courage and resilience and join their call for an immediate cessation of actions undermining their right to protest, speak freely, and support the Palestinian inalienable rights to live in security, dignity, and freedom. Universities are not just educational institutions but crucial platforms for free speech, debate, and critical thinking.

We call upon university administrations across the United States to engage constructively with their students and respect their right to academic freedom and free expression. Universities should facilitate, not obstruct, student activism, which plays a crucial role in development, freedom, and equality. We also urge President Biden and key decision-makers to stop supporting mechanisms that may perpetuate conflicts, such as arms sales and military aid that have been continuously provided to Israel.

IUSY expresses its unwavering support to the students in the United States and worldwide. We will continue advocating for the rights of students to protest and will amplify your calls for transparency, accountability, and justice. We will continue to advocate for freedom, justice, and dignity for the Palestinian people. We call for cessation of hostilities against Gaza, and an end to the Israeli military occupation and apartheid of Palestine. We will continue to hold those in power accountable for their role in perpetuating conflict and undermining the foundation of democracy.
