IUSY expresses concern for conflict in DRC and condemns Rwanda’s support to the M23 rebel group
IUSY expresses profound concern over the escalating conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly the recent offensive by the M23 rebel group, which has seized control of key areas, including the city of Goma.
We strongly condemn the support provided by the Rwandan Armed Forces to the M23 rebels and urge for dissuasive sanctions against the government of Rwanda. Such actions not only violate international law and the sovereignty of the DRC but also worsen the humanitarian crisis in the region. The involvement of external forces undermines efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution and threatens regional stability.
The current hostilities have led to significant civilian casualties, with over 700 people killed and 2880 individuals injured over a four-day period. The conflict has also displaced hundreds of thousands of people, compounding an already dire humanitarian situation.
IUSY denounces the attacks on diplomatic missions, including France, the United States, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, The Netherlands and Belgium. Attacks on diplomatic facilities are unacceptable and further destabilize the situation. We call for the protection of all diplomatic missions and accountability for those responsible for these violations of international norms.
IUSY urges upon all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities and commit to diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. We urge the M23 rebels to halt their advance and withdraw from occupied territories. We also call on the Rwandan government to cease its support for the M23 and respect the territorial integrity of the DRC.
We emphasize the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring the provision of humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict. All parties must adhere to international humanitarian law and human rights standards, refraining from actions that endanger civilian lives and livelihoods.
IUSY reaffirms its support for African-led initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict and urges the international community to actively support these efforts. It is imperative that all stakeholders work collaboratively to restore peace and stability in the DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.
