Greenland’s future belongs to the greenlanders

July 2026 European Committee
  1. When Donald Trump says that the United States “must have Greenland,” it does not happen in a vacuum. The statement comes in the shadow of a long series of previous threats against Greenland.
  2. Since Donald Trump first took office as president, a grave pattern has emerged in which threats, military power, and violations of international law are used to provoke geopolitical change. It is dangerous to the world.
  3. Directing military threats at an allied country is unacceptable. It is a direct attack on the principle of sovereignty, the UN Charter, the right to self-determination, and the international legal order that is meant to protect both big and small nations.
  4. Donald Trump has once again recently demonstrated that he is willing to undermine the international legal order through violence and threats. We fear that he will do so again.
  5. IUSY stands in solidarity with Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark against American threats.
  6. The US has no right to annex any territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is a people and a community with the right to determine its own future.

The International Union of Socialist Youth reiterates:

  1. We stand in solidarity with the Greenlandic people, Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.
  2. The United States must respect international law.
  3. Donald Trump must respect Greenland and the Greenlandic people.
  4. Donald Trump must respect the borders and territorial sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
  5. Violations of international law can never be normalized, regardless of who commits them. International law applies to everyone – including the United States of America.
