Resolution in Defense of the Sovereignty of the Panama Canal

1. The Panama Canal is a historic symbol of the sovereignty, self-determination, and dignity of the Panamanian people. Its recovery and national administration represent an achievement won through popular struggle and respect for international law, and they constitute a fundamental pillar for democracy, regional peace, and cooperation among peoples.
2. In the face of recent rhetoric and pressures seeking to question Panama’s sovereign control over this interoceanic waterway, it is essential to reaffirm the exclusive right of the Panamanian State and its people to administer, protect, and decide over the Panama Canal without any form of external interference.

3. We reaffirm the full and inalienable sovereignty of the Panamanian people over the Panama Canal, in accordance with international law and the principles of peoples’ self-determination.
4. We reject any attempt at interference, pressure, or external questioning that undermines Panama’s sovereign control over the Canal or seeks to instrumentalize it for geopolitical purposes.
5. We express our solidarity with the Panamanian people and youth, supporting their right to freely decide over their strategic resources.
6. We call on IUSY member organizations to defend sovereignty, peace, and international cooperation as fundamental principles of democratic socialism.
