Resolution on Nicaragua

July 2026 American Committee
  1. The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) expresses its deep concern over the severe political and human rights crisis that Nicaragua has faced since 2018, as a result of the consolidation of an authoritarian regime led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
  2. State repression has resulted in more than 600 people killed or disappeared, thousands of arbitrary detentions, and the stripping of nationality from over 400 individuals for peacefully exercising fundamental rights such as protest, freedom of expression, and political organization.
  3. IUSY condemns the constitutional reforms approved in 2025, which establish a dynastic dictatorship through the introduction of a co-presidency, the extension of the presidential term, and the complete subordination of all branches of government to the Executive, with the aim of perpetuating the Ortega-Murillo family in power.
  4. IUSY endorses the report of the Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua (GHREN), which documents crimes against humanity and the existence of a structured system of repression, contributing to truth, memory, and the dignity of the victims.

From IUSY, we:

  1. Condemn the systematic repression and the breakdown of the democratic order in Nicaragua.
  2. Demand the immediate cessation of repression and the release of all political prisoners.
  3. Call for the restoration of nationality, the return of confiscated properties, and the full reinstatement of all civil and political rights to those who have been arbitrarily deprived of them.
  4. Urge the progressive international community to strengthen political and diplomatic pressure to ensure truth, justice, and accountability.
  5. Reaffirm IUSY’s full solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and youth in their struggle for democracy, justice, and freedom.
