RIGHT TO EDUCATION IN PALESTINE – THE ISRAELI ATTACK ON EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

July 2026 Mediterranean Committee

CONTENT:

  1. On the 6th of January 2026, the Israeli army stormed into the campus of Birzeit University (West Bank) in broad daylight. During the attack, the Israeli army fired live rounds at students, threw sound grenades and used tear gas against students and members of the university staff. This deliberately illegal act led to the injury of dozens of Palestinian students and the halt of teaching.
  2. This attack is one of numerous attacks that the Israeli regime has been systematically inflicting against the Palestinian educational system. Accordingly, since Israel’s destructive campaign against Gaza in late 2023, it is estimated that the Israeli army has destroyed over 200 Palestinian educational facilities, including primary schools, colleges, and universities, while even turning some into military outposts to conduct armed action against the Palestinian population.

This resolution calls all YUSI member organisations to acknowledge the following:

  1. The importance of education as a necessary and undeniable human right.
  2. The condemnation of Israel’s reckless and aggressive behaviour towards students and educational facilities.
  3. A condemnation of Israel’s use of Palestinian educational facilities to commit war crimes and terrorise the Palestinian youth from pursuing their studies freely.
  4. The need to urge the international community to protect the sanctity of educational institutions in Palestine in order to avoid the recurrence of attacks such as the one at Birzeit University earlier this January.
