The Future of Private Communication

1. It is time that we recognize and take seriously the conflict between security interests and
2. the individual’s right to privacy. Our messages and calls need protection from state
3. surveillance. Proposals for chat control, where digital communication is monitored and
4. scanned to detect illegal content, represent a dangerous shift toward mass surveillance.
5. Even if the intention may seem good, these proposals threaten fundamental rights such as
6. freedom of expression and personal privacy. It is unacceptable for private conversations
7. to be scrutinized by systems without any suspicion of a crime. This violates basic
8. principles of due process and risks creating a “surveillance state.”
9. Furthermore, technologies used to scan communications could undermine the security of
10. our digital services, as encryption might need to be weakened. IUSY should take a
11. leading role in defending individual freedoms and rights in the digital age.
12. Instead of introducing these dangerous mass-surveillance tools, the focus should be on
13. strengthening existing legal frameworks and technologies that protect both security and
14. privacy. Organizations such as Amnesty International, along with numerous technology
15. experts, have warned about the negative consequences of chat control.
