Official resolution
Uruguay: A Progressive Beacon, Dialogue, and Unity for Social Justice
July 2026
American Committee
- The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) welcomes the return of the Frente Amplio to the government of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, following a period in opposition, assuming office on March 1, 2025. In March of this year, the progressive government completes its first year in office, enjoying broad public approval, reflecting popular confidence in a political project committed to social justice, democracy, and equality.
- During this first year of governance, a central objective has been set: advancing toward a long-term national agreement, with a ten-year horizon, through which the wealthiest sectors of society would contribute 1% of their wealth in order to eradicate child poverty. IUSY recognizes this initiative as a concrete expression of social responsibility, wealth redistribution, and an ethical commitment to children, placing social justice at the core of public policy.
- Uruguay has historically defined itself as a peaceful nation with a strong vocation for pacification. Its principal approach has been dialogue as the primary path to conflict resolution, the construction of consensus, and the strengthening of national and Latin American unity. In line with these principles, Uruguay condemns all forms of armed and violent conflict at the international level, advocating for a permanent ceasefire and promoting spaces for dialogue among the parties involved, aimed at achieving political, peaceful, and lasting solutions.
- The growing alignment between concentrated capitalism and right-wing and far-right political forces demands a coordinated and determined response from progressive movements. It is essential to promote joint participation and unity of action among all social democratic and socialist organizations, both nationally and internationally, in order to build a united front capable of confronting the political, economic, and social challenges of our time.
- In this context, the current Uruguayan government plays a fundamental role. It is within this institutional space that fostering the exchange of ideas, strategic debate, and collective reflection becomes essential. The objective is to consolidate and present strong, shared proposals that offer effective solutions to the diverse socioeconomic realities of Latin America and the Caribbean, grounded in a rights-based, equitable, and sustainable approach.
- Finally, IUSY recognizes Uruguay as a progressive beacon for the continent, highlighting its dialogical and constructive role in a region marked by deep inequalities, political tensions, and, in many cases, high levels of violence. We reaffirm the importance of Uruguay’s political and moral leadership, as well as its commitment to peace, democracy, and regional integration.
- IUSY reaffirms its commitment to supporting progressive processes in Latin America and the Caribbean, and to building a region that is more just, inclusive, democratic, and peaceful.
